What is Craniosacral Therapy?

Each body has a blueprint of health. Our ability to heal and self-repair however can get overwhelmed by a variety of factors. Craniosacral Therapy is a

non-invasive therapy that balances the central nervous system and thus supports  musculoskeletal, respiratory, immune and endocrine function.  Using gentle, hands-on techniques to release tension in the craniosacral system and improve flow of cerebrospinal fluid, the body’s natural healing processes are supported and facilitated.

• The practice is founded on the osteopathic model and developed by osteopaths. The biodynamic model includes the more subtle and unseen quantum forces.  It is particularly suited to working with trauma, because the therapist's role is to listen to the physiological responses in the client’s body, and to support and enhance any natural processes – rather than making an intervention or directing the outcome.  There are some other biomechanical ways of working, based on bones, tissue and fluid.

• Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) circulates between the spinal cord, brain, and surrounding membranes – nourishing, protecting, and supporting them.  It acts as nutrient delivery and waste removal to the central nervous system, making the proper flow of CSF key to balance and vitality, with disruptions leading to dysregulation and inflammation.  CSF is also a conduit for the "Breath of Life," the ever-present vital force that sustains all life forms. It flows through and connects everything in existence, from the smallest atom to the largest galaxy.

What To Expect During Treatment

The treatment consists of lying on a treatment table in regular everyday clothes, usually on your back but sometimes on the side or supine. The holds are to the head, spine, sacrum, limbs, joints and diaphragm. The role of the therapist is to tune in to the body's inherent rhythms, to listen to the subtle movements of the cranial bones, the sacrum, and the flow of cerebrospinal fluid, the movement of fascia, and to any restrictions or contractions that may be present. During a session, we orient to resources (things that support vitality and health) to activate and support the body throughout the process. By creating the right conditions between practitioner and client, the body’s innate intelligence and ability to heal and repair itself are triggered.
