Sugar Cravings

Beat those sugar cravings!    Refined sugar provides us with nothing which is of any benefit to us – it is stripped of all nutrients, and simply supplies us with unnecessary calories.   Sugar gives us a temporary boost, but this boost is artificial and inevitably leaves us feeling irritable and craving more.  As it is ultimately doing us more harm than good, sugar is a habit which needs to be kicked.

Try one of the many sugar alternatives available, such as Xylitol, Stevia, or Agave syrup.  These are excellent sugar substitutes which can still give you that sweet hit, but have none of the nasty side effects of sugar.  By adding these alternatives to your diet, it is likely that you will never give refined sugar another thought!

Sugar suppresses the immune system, contributes to premature ageing by interfering with collagen production, and is a major contributing factor to type two diabetes by causing unstable blood sugar levels.  It also encourages the proliferation of unfriendly yeasts such as candida in the digestive tract, which can lead to numerous health problems.

So what can you do to curb your cravings?  Read on for a list of some herbs and nutrients which you can try to help wean you off your daily dose of sugar:

Gymnema – This herb is fantastic for dulling the taste of sugar on your tastebuds.  Put a few drops on your tongue and eat something sweet – it blocks the sweet taste receptors on your tongue and you will taste nothing!  This is a great help in kicking the sugar habit.

Chromium – One of the most important minerals in correcting blood sugar imbalances.   If you are reliant on sugar for an energy boost, and it is added to your diet daily, it is highly likely that your blood sugar levels will be unstable.  Chromium is necessary for healthy blood sugar balance.  It is a component of Glucose Tolerance Factor which improves insulin signalling and therefore controls healthy blood sugar levels.

Magnesium – is another mineral which is helpful, especially if you find yourself craving chocolate – this indicates that your magnesium stores are low.

Zinc – Important for healthy blood sugar regulation, as well as having a host of other important functions in the body.

Alpha Lipoic Acid – As well as being a potent antioxidant, it helps to recycle Vitamin’s C and E in the body, and last but not least, it encourages insulin to do it’s job by allowing excess glucose to be carried out of the bloodstream and into the body’s cells.

Keeping your blood sugar levels stable is also achievable by including plenty of protein and good fats with each meal.  Including protein and fat with a carbohydrate-rich meal slows the release of sugar into the blood stream, therefore keeping your blood sugar levels balanced and even.
