What is Lyme disease, symptoms and treatments

Lyme disease (Neuroborreliosis) is caused by a spirochete, Borrelia burdorferi, transmitted by tick bites, mainly in the summer time. The site of the tick bite is red with a pale centre gradually increasing in size to form the unique marker lesion, a bull’s eye which may become large over a period of time. There are 20 known species of Borrelia that can cause human illness, and it is not uncommon for people with Lyme’s disease to harbour at least two species. The microbes disseminate through the circulation, causing first, sore throat, dry cough, fever and headaches, followed by cardiac arrhythmias and neurologic abnormalities (facial nerve paralysis). Pain and swelling may develop in the large joints, sometimes progressing to chronic arthritis.
